World Mental Health Day 2019

The JMSS team were exhibiting at UK Construction Week on World Mental Health Day this year and, as the topic of mental health is becoming increasingly popular in the construction industry, the team were lucky enough to meet with two amazing charities exhibiting at the show who are working hard to ensure industry leaders, the government, employers and employees are doing everything they can to understand and improve workplace mental health.

The two charities exhibiting in the Wellbeing Zone of the show were Mates In Mind & Mind Your Head.

In a recent survey conducted by UK Construction Week, with support from Mates in Mind charity, they found that 6 out of 10 workers in construction have suffered mental ill-health because of their work. Mates in Mind is now calling on industry leaders and government to be more considered and consistent if they want to achieve meaningful improvement within the workplace.

Here’s a few facts and figures we picked up in the Wellbeing Zone at UK Construction Week:

• 33% of the UK workforce have been formally diagnosed with a mental health condition.
• 68% of managers believe there are barriers to providing support for the mental wellbeing of those they manage.
• Of 1,419 suicides in construction in the past 5 years, 1,409 were men.
